Accidents can happen anywhere to anyone at anytime, so we need to be prepared. It can be a very stressful time, even if no one is injured. Here’s a an emergency checklist from SAFECO Insurance that may help.

Keep an Emergency Kit in your car that contains these helpful items:

  • blanket
  • notepad
  • pen or pencil
  • flares
  • jumper cables (with instructions)
  • garbage bag
  • water
  • flashlight
  • first aid supplies
  • disposable camera

And if you do have an accident, here are the steps you need to take.

Accident Checklist:

  1. Get help for the injured.
  2. Call the police and remain at the scene.
  3. Warn oncoming traffic of the accident by setting hazard lights and flares.
  4. Try to remain calm.
  5. Do not admit fault.
  6. Call your insurance company.
  7. Exchange information with the other driver(s). name, address, phone number, makes of vehicle, license number and insurance company/policy number.
  8. Get information from all passengers and witnesses. Name, address, phone number
  9. Sketch the accident in your notepad. Include street names/numbers and any important particulars.
  10. Examine and record damage to other vehicles and property . Write notes and take photos.
  11. Do not discuss the accident or sign documents. Only answer questions asked by the police and your Claims Representative.

I would also like to add that it is important that after the accident you find a safe place, for you and your passengers, while waiting for the police to arrive. Drivers in traffic are often distracted by accident scenes and may cause further damage.
